Helps Close Academic Achievement Gap in
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education

WASHINGTON – The Links Foundation, Incorporated is pleased to announce that it has been selected for a $250,000 grant from Chevron in support of STEM education. The funds, designated to help eliminate the STEM academic achievement gap for students of color, will be dispersed over a two-year period, beginning in the fall of 2012.

The grant provides vital funding to enhance one of the key programs of The Links, Incorporated, “STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain.” With a focus on students from 6th to 12th grades, the program aims to enhance the current curriculum, emphasizing STEM disciplines, engineering and energy industry career readiness. The Links, Incorporated expects to reach approximately 1,200 students across the country with this academic enrichment.

A key enhancement of the program is the incorporation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration STEM Application Content. The content includes educational and professional development, as well as teacher training tools.

“Our organization has dedicated itself to ensuring quality STEM education for youth of all ages,” said Margot James Copeland, national president of The Links, Incorporated and The Links Foundation, Incorporated. “Through our STEM – ULATING Left Brain and Right Brain program, students are provided with opportunities to be exposed to and readied for STEM – related careers. This Chevron collaboration will have a tremendous impact on all the students it reaches.”

“Chevron believes that STEM education is critical to preparing the next generation for the increasing number of technical jobs in the modern economy,” said Linda Padon, general manager of corporate public policy at Chevron. “We believe that our partnership with The Links Foundation, Incorporated will create opportunities to inspire all students to pursue careers in STEM fields.”
